BT Sport pundit Chris Sutton has given a bizarre take on Kyle Lafferty’s potential move to Rangers, claiming that the forward is a ‘time bomb’ and ‘a bit of a nutter’, which the Gers should avoid signing.

The former Celtic striker isn’t shy of dishing out a controversial take or two, but even by his standards his comments seem strange given the exceptional season the Northern Ireland international had last term.

As quoted by The Scottish Sun, Sutton said:

I think it would be an underwhelming signing. I don’t think he is as good as Morelos. I know Morelos has his critics about his finishing ability. But, I think he is a handful.

Lafferty, at his age, is a player who really needs to play games. We all know he is a bit of a nutter at times. I’m not so sure he will be the answer for Rangers.

I don’t know if he will be a good influence, but why would you want to chuck in a time bomb at this stage when everything seems to be going smoothly at Rangers. The recruitment at Ibrox seems to have been good. Why risk that?

The idea that he is going to arrive at Ibrox and cause mayhem in the dressing room or jeopardise the team’s ambitions with crazy behaviour seems a bit melodramatic.

The pundit also seems to misunderstand what Lafferty’s role would be. Alfredo Morelos is a solid option, but he can’t play every game next season and is also a completely different type of player to the Hearts man.

More options for Steven Gerrard can only be a benefit and at the six-figure fees mentioned, Lafferty would be something of a bargain.

He scored 19 goals last season, a goal contribution that would go down at treat at Ibrox.
