Vital Rangers has already looked at potential pre-contract signings who could be added to the squad either in the summer or brought in early in January and it would appear that one previous target  has re-emerged as a genuine transfer option.

We need depth in midfield for both the short and long term, Steven Davis will certainly leave the club this summer and Scott Arfield simply shouldn’t be playing as often as he is.

Scotland international Kenny McLean was close to signing for Rangers when he left Aberdeen but chose to go to Norwich City – Steven Gerrard made an attempt when he was there too – and the prospect of playing in the Premier League but now it seems he might get the second chance that few players do, according to The Daily Express.

The former Auchenhowie academy product has spoken in the past about his support for the club and he would add a different option to the midfield. McLean, with 28 caps, is a genuine box-to-box midfielder rather than a ball winner or water carrier and it is an area that we have been short in for some time.

He has played and held his own at the top end of the Championship and Premier League for the last four seasons, he is also well established in the Scotland set up. We could be  losing a lot of experience in midfield for a variety of reasons so being able to bring someone in who knows the club, knows the expectations and knows what he will be up against every week makes a lot of sense from a recruitment point of view.

There are few signings that make absolute sense but I reckon McLean is as good a fit as there is. I’m not suggesting for a second that we build the team around him or that he would be a marquee signing, however, utilising the Bosman system is essential in a summer that could see a massive squad overhaul and, potentially, a lot of money to be spent.
