With Rangers due to return for pre-season training on Monday, the next step for Robby McCrorie draws closer amid speculation over his short-term future.

With Allan McGregor recently signing a fresh 12-month extension, that news inevitably cast a dark shadow over the status of the 24-year old as he is very unlikely to stick around any longer as third choice between the posts.

A final loan move or even a clean break is set to happen. It is expected that final talks this week would confirm the situation and preferences of McCrorie, who has been linked to other Scottish Premiership sides as well as Manchester United in what would be a surprise switch.

With his recent breakthrough into the Scotland squad group, it won’t be lost on the player that he needs game time and further experience and consistency in order to improve himself. In order to do that, he needs to be a number one or at least to have an equal fight for the gloves.

That isn’t available at Rangers at present, which is why a move will happen soon. With just 12 months left on his contract, it is likely that the club will honour the wishes of the goalkeeper who answered the call when it was required last season.

As Steven Gerrard and several of his first team players were stuck down with a bout of Covid, McCrorie took responsibility and produced the goods with two clean sheets in his games against Alashkert and Celtic. That double would be the only first team appearances that he would make last season, with the return of McGregor and Jon McLaughlin relegating him back to the fringes.

Over the coming days, all that appears set to change.
