Manager Ally McCoist was certainly a happy man at full time last night as we obliterated Clyde eight one in the second round of the Petrofac Training Cup.

A far better performance and some clinical finishing in front of goal left the manager very happy indeed as he spoke to the Official Site at full time, but he was quick to point out that given the size of the scoreline nobody would yet be getting carried away as we still have a lot of improvement to make, consistency to garner and a long way to go this season.

‘We’re delighted with the result, the performance and the quality of goals we scored. I’m disappointed with the one we lost late on but with the greatest of respect to the boys, we’d had to take Airdy off and were caught up the park a little bit. There’s always potential for a hiccup and watching Clyde against Queen’s Park last week, we thought they could pose us one or two threats. But we stamped our authority on the game early on and could actually have won by more in the end.’

A hattrick from Kris Boyd will certainly take the headlines in the press, following quickly by another impressive showing from Lewis Macleod and his brace, and a further double by skipper Lee McCulloch, with Airdy grabbing a solo effort to complete the scoreline.

The gaffer remained grounded though, going on to say it’s only one result and performance so far, and whilst it’s definitely one we have needed this season we need plenty more days like that again so it’s something that will lift spirits and confidence and gives us a good foundation to now build on in the coming weeks, and that will be his focus in making sure we do.

As for the hattrick hero, celebrating his 31 birthday yesterday evening, McCoist added that he believes they will be the first goals of many now he is back at the club and undoubtedly that will do his confidence the world of good so hopefully he’ll kick on from this and kick on in the next game.
