Manager Ally McCoist has said he was delighted with the showing of Barrie McKay in Thursday’s opening pre season friendly against Buckie Thistle.

It was McKay’s first game for Rangers in over nine months and the winger was in excellent form, and although McCoist refused to get too carried away, he did say that this is the sort of showing we should be expecting from McKay in the future now.

Having made only four appearances for the club last season, he then spent the rest of the campaign on loan at Morton who he moved to in December, and speaking to the Official Site McCoist certainly believes the spell out did him good.

‘Attitude is a big thing in anybody’s make up. Barrie has lightening pace and when he uses that, well, he can be a defender’s nightmare, to tell the truth. Particularly in a one against one situation, he can be very effective and I was very pleased with him. We’re not getting carried away because it’s just the first hour or so from him but he did what we wanted. He went by players, he was composed and I thought his decision making was good in terms of when to take players on and when the pass.’

The gaffer goes on to say that he was also making the correct choices when it came to opportunities to shoot, because he was taking the sensible choices, but not being tempted by the pie in the sky opportunities where we’d have simply lost the ball and not kept the pressure on.

‘It’s a big season for Barrie, as it is for a lot of the younger boys. He and others certainly did themselves no harm.’
