With the season drawing to a close and Rangers almost having secured the title again this campaign, manager Ally McCoist has launched a staunch defence of the team and their performances this side of the year which have left a fair bit to be desired.
East Fife was again another of those days where we narrowly won and the performance wasn’t near our standards and the gaffer has already admitted it looked a very tired and lacklustre display from us, but ultimately we still got the win.
The cliche of winning ugly is becoming a regular comment.
Speaking to the Official Site McCoist was both adamant that he was confident performances would increase again once we got ourselves over this blip, but also that he was thoroughly satisfied with the direction we were heading in this season as we are on course to reach our aims – ahead of time – and we have Cup competitions to consider as well.
‘It was a great result for Scotland but would it be the case one or two people would have been disappointed with the performance? The last time I’d looked, we’d scored more goals than any team in Britain in the league. It goes with the territory that performance levels might dip. We can handle that, it’s our job to do the best we can and I think our results have been fine.’
McCoist goes on to say that we are scoring goals, we are keeping clean sheets but obviously our performance levels again and the manner and the comfort of our victories obviously need improving, but the bottom line is football is a results business and we are getting those and well on course for tying up the title and promotion again which is mainly what people want.
Suppose in some ways you can look at it as the lessor of two evils…I guess McCoist’s main point is would people prefer the results or the performances and if there’s something to rightly criticise then it has to be performances on the back of victories and not the results on the back of great scintillating displays.
