Whilst there are obvious differences to their style of play, Rangers new attacker Scott Wright can look to Neil McCann as an example to raise his game and make a significant contribution at Ibrox.

Back in 1998, McCann made to move along the M8 to sign for Rangers from Hearts.

That Hearts side were a good team under Jim Jefferies and McCann was part of the Jambos team that beat the Gers in the 1998 Scottish Cup Final in what was the last hurrah for Walter Smith’s first era and much of the 9-in-a-row team, before the reign of Dick Advocaat.

Later that year, the player made the move to Ibrox and never looked back.

McCann was a mainstay in royal blue over the next five years. He went on to win three SPL titles, four Scottish Cups and two League Cups under Advocaat and later, Alex McLeish.

He also starred in the Champions League, won many Scotland caps and eventually left Rangers for a spell in the Premier League with Southampton.

A fine example for Scott Wright to seek to emulate in his own way.

Following the move that was confirmed on Monday, Wright appears eager to get going and to make an impression.

On signing for Rangers he said, “It is a fantastic feeling for me personally and is a very proud moment for myself and my family.”

“Obviously I agreed a pre-contract about a week ago but the draw to come to the club now was always big and I am delighted it is over the line and I am here as a Rangers player.”

Wright continued, “It is important for me to come in and learn first but I am here to drive competition and try to win a place in the team.”

“The welcome I have had here has been fantastic. I feel like I have worked with them already. They have been so welcoming but I am really looking forward to coming in now and getting started.

“I am an attacking player, I want to get fans off their seats and I want to be exciting. I feel like I fit in to the way Rangers play – I like to be direct and get at the opponent.”

The line above is exactly what Rangers fans want to hear and as a former Aberdeen player, Wright doesn’t need time to settle into the league or style of the Scottish Premiership.

Getting into the team is the first challenge for the 23 year-old, who has two goals and two assists from 17 league appearances so far this season, but he also needs to become a better player and exploit the opportunity to work with coaches like Steven Gerrard and Michael Beale.

On the lure of playing under Gerrard, Wright said of his new manager:

“It was another big draw, it is going to be a fantastic experience for me. I have spoken to the gaffer and his management team and it is something I am really excited to do to come in and work with them.”

“The conversations I have had with them have been positive and I feel I can definitely improve here as a player.”

“The most important thing for me is to be positive and to come in with an attitude to learn every day and learn from my teammates as well as the management.”

There remains plenty of time and games in this campaign for Scott Wright to get his Rangers career off to a positive start.
