Master and apprentice – Rangers duo heading for Belfast

Steven Davis celebrates scoring for Northern Ireland

In what is an exciting development, Charlie McCann has been named alongside Steven Davis in the Northern Ireland squad for the international games coming up.

Over the course of 10 days, Ian Baraclough’s Northern Ireland team will play four games – against Greece (H), Cyprus (A), Kosovo (A), Cyprus (H) – as they embark on a new Nations League campaign.

From a Rangers perspective, it is great that McCann will join up with the full international side, alongside the skipper and legendary figure Davis, having recently switched international allegiance from the Republic of Ireland to NI.

The 20-year old is one of four new call ups to the squad alongside Glentoran’s Conor McMenamin, Brodie Spencer of Huddersfield Town and Man City’s Shea Charles.

Role model

For club and country, Davis is the class act on and off the pitch for McCann to look to emulate. In certain aspects, there are similarities in their game and the prospect of one taking over from the over. long term, is tantalising.

The Coventry-born youngster appeared very happy to receive the call for the senior squad, further validating his recent choice on the international stage as well as his steady progress at Ibrox under Gio van Bronckhorst which included an appearance at Tynecastle on the last day of the season.

Over the course of the four games, there will be scope for some minutes on the pitch but much of that will depend on the impact made in and around the squad and training during the two week camp.

Former Ranger Kyle Lafferty returns to the squad, with another in Jordan Thompson keeping his place in the panel.
