An upbeat response was provided by B team boss David McCallum when asked about the condition of Alex Lowry on his return from injury.

Following the nasty and needless challenge on him last month at Dumbarton, there were fears of a damaging, lengthy absence for the prodigious young talent but those worries have been allayed, relatively speaking.

Whilst not setting any unrealistic expectations, McCallum was quite content to share the positivity of the situation:

“He is progressing well. He is obviously not back on the football pitch yet and not back in contention for any game time at the moment but any time I’ve seen him or had conversations about him, it seems to be quite positive just now.”

McCallum then played down talk of a timescale for a return to action:

“I think when he got the initial feedback that the injury wasn’t going to be as long-term as what we initially thought, I think naturally Alex felt a bit better about that because he could see a bit of brightness ahead but in terms of that, I don’t have any more that I am able to share just now.”

Optimism

The coach was speaking ahead of the UEFA Youth League test against Napoli which will be another great education for the young Gers and one that Lowry should have been taking centre stage in. The game takes place on Wednesday at Firhill with a 2pm kick-off.

It is possibly too hopeful to think of a return over a matter of weeks rather than months but the overall satisfaction is that there is no long term issue for Alex Lowry, similar to what happened to Ianis Hagi.

Hopefully a first team squad recall won’t be too far away for a very talented player in Lowry who has to get his chance to shine in due course.
