Rangers have been credited with an interest in Liverpool striker, Taiwo Awoniyi.

He is currently on loan with Bundesliga outfit Union Berlin, where he has scored five goals in 13 appearances.

According to 90min.com, both Old Firm clubs are tracking the player who hasn’t featured at all for Liverpool due to work permit issues.

They stated, “The 23-year-old’s form has caught the attention of a number of clubs. 90min has learned that there is Premier League interest, although it is Celtic and Rangers who are leading the chase.”

Over the last five years since signing for the Anfield club, Awoniyi has been a nomad with seven different loan spells.

This most recent spell in the German capital with Union is working out to be productive. A double figure tally for the season would bring him into the reckoning for many clubs.

The same report above quotes a £5m fee for the player but that will depend on his form and other factors.

Liverpool have the player contracted until 2023.

This one appears to be unlikely speculation, but it is rough diamonds like Taiwo Awoniyi that can be polished.

The implications of Brexit mean that landing a work permit in the UK will be prohibitive for this type of player profile as the Nigerian has only been capped up to U23 level.

90min added, “In England, at least, the FA recently outlined work permit requirements that now apply to all overseas players in the wake of Brexit, putting particular focus on senior and youth international appearances and club appearances based on competition minutes.”

“The Scottish system works slightly differently, but Rangers were able to secure a work permit for Colombian striker Alfredo Morelos in 2017 prior him becoming a full international and with only 18 months in Europe at Finnish club HJK Helsinki under his belt.”
