Football finance expert Kieran Maguire has heralded Rangers smart business in securing the services of Glen Kamara until 2025.

The Price of Football podcast guru laid out the ‘win-win’ aspect of the deal and declared that it should be a cause of celebration for all at Ibrox.

Speaking to Football Insider, Maguire was clear on the benefits of the contract extension, as well as the risk that Rangers have averted with the agreement:

“There are benefits in getting your best talents to commit to a long-term contract for all parties.”

“The player benefits because it will come with a pay rise, the club gets the protection if the player decides they want to leave or an offer comes in which is acceptable then it’s more money.”

“The fans potentially benefit in one of two ways. A – they potentially get to see Glen Kamara in a Rangers shirt for a long time and B – if somebody does come in then Rangers get a good price which allows the club to go into the transfer market and get a player of similar stature.”

Reality

All of the above is valid and correct but one pivotal aspect on Rangers short-term future was not outlined.

Due to the decision not to sanction a first-team player sale and activate player trading, an effective ‘all-in’ approach is now in play in regard to the Gers bid to retain the Premiership title.

The reality is that if Rangers do not keep the trophy come next May, then an effective ‘fire sale’ will be underway.

Rangers financial situation will not be able to withstand the pressure which would follow.

In the case of Kamara, yes he is now tied on a long-term deal but in such a situation, the true value of players like him will not be attainable – and buying clubs would be happy to take full advantage.

As things stand, Steven Gerrard’s champions sit at the top of the pile in Scotland with plenty of room for improvement and no room for complacency.

Champions again is the only desired outcome, the alternative would be too painful.
