“Obviously he had some successful moments here under Dick Advocaat, and he’s an experienced coach now. He’s been a coach, he’s been a manager, and he’s had success. Time will tell.

“I think there is a lot of candidates who look like a good fit on paper. Frank Lampard is one, I think even John Terry. These two in particular are a similar profile to Steven Gerrard.

“In the ex-players you have Gio, you have Rino Gattuso, and you even have people like Ronald Koeman being mentioned.

“There are a lot of good names in the frame, but I think Gio is the frontrunner.”

The encouraging news is that I’ve yet to see anyone who thinks this wouldn’t be a good appointment including ex-pros, managers and pundits alike, it’s a move that fits both on paper and emotionally.

It looks like the easiest job that Ross Wilson will have in his time as sporting director, a universally popular candidate who also ticks all the boxes. There may be other “names in the frame” but it’s clear that Miller is right – Van Bronckhorst is the front runner, by some distance.
