Speculation has been rife, since Steven Gerrard joined Aston Villa, that he will return to Rangers to poach the players who served him well during his three and a half year tenure.

Top of that list is a player who has long been considered good enough to make the step up to the Premier League having shone for Rangers in the Europa League and for Finland on international duty. Glen Kamara is a player who, much though it pains me to say it, should be playing at a higher level than the Scottish Premiership.

Speaking to Football Insider, former Villa striker, Kevin Phillips, has backed the move claiming that it would tick a lot of boxes:

“It wouldn’t surprise me one little bit if he went back in for one of the lads at Rangers.

“It’s great to have players in that midfield area who know how the manager works. Kamara knows how the ways in which manager works and he knows what he expects. That player can speak to the other players and help them understand what the manager wants, his philosophy.

“It makes sense that he would go back for one of his former players.

“Kamara is certainly a player who could do a job in the Premier League.”

Kamara’s ability in transition is a huge asset at both ends of the park, his ability to find space in possession when it is limited and to break up opposition attacks makes him one of our most valuable players and as such will have a transfer value that reflects this.

Talks of £5-6million bids are laughable given the fees paid for Kris Ajer and Odsonne Edouard in the last years of their contracts, especially when you consider that Kamara was a stand out in the Euros – a competition that the Celtic pair weren’t even at.

Phillips is right though, it wouldn’t be a surprise if Gerrard returns to Ibrox to cherry pick the finest talent, but having spent the last few years talking them up, he’ll need to have deep pockets.
