Steven Gerrard will add quality to his squad this season and one player said to be attracting his attentions is Reading’s Josh Laurent, according to a recent story.

The Sun reckons that the 26-year old, who has played almost every game for the Championship side this season, is being lined up to add physicality to the Rangers midfield but will have to fight off interest from Brighton if they are to be successful in any deal.

The report claims:

“The way he dominated midfield in a tough division has impressed both Potter and Rangers manager Steven Gerrard.

“Crucially, he only has one year left on his contract at the Madejski Stadium having only agreed to join the club on a two-year deal last summer.

“That means any fee would only be in the region of around £8million, the kind of money Brighton and Rangers have to play with as they look to strengthen their squads for next season.”

There is no doubt that midfield will be a priority area for both the short and long term, Ryan Jack could be struggling to make the Champions League qualifiers and Glen Kamara is suspended for the first three, Ianis Hagi has played a deeper role in the last two domestic matches but the Gers gaffer is usually more pragmatic in these fixtures – something that has served him well in the past.

We also need to consider how long Scott Arfield and Steven Davis can continue at their current levels, yes, they have been outstanding but a lack of proactivity could be costly, Laurent is just the latest in a long list of midfielders being considered to make the step up, he certainly fits the profile , but he won’t be the last name to be linked in what is sure to be an eventful summer.
