Rangers have been linked with a host of midfielders this transfer window, mostly of a profile similar to the likes of Glen Kamara and Joe Aribo, young, talented and with plenty of room for development, as well as the potential for substantial profit further down the line.

However, one player currently available on a free transfer fits the other end of the spectrum, experienced, capable of making an immediate impact and available for free.

AZ Almaar have just a matter of days before deciding whether or not to extend the contract of Steven Davis’s former Southampton team-mate, Jordy Clasie. At 29-years old he still has plenty of life left in his legs but he has missed 26 games this season through an unfortunate pelvis injury, his previous medical history has nothing too serious to write home about though so the red flag isn’t quite waving, it could also help that our sporting director, Ross Wilson, will know the player and his representatives.

How many players do Rangers have at the Euros this summer?

He has 17 Netherlands caps to his name and over 300 appearances in the Eredivisie and Premier League, primarily as a defensive midfielder, exactly the type of player we are looking for, someone who can come in and rotate with Ryan Jack and his old colleague Davis.

Using the free market wisely to support “project” players is key to achieving sustained success, not every signing can be flipped and sold for millions a few years later, securing the odd one or two like Clasie, who can improve the squad’s depth without costing a fortune is equally as important.

Ross Wilson normally likes to get his work done early and with most contracts ending in June, we could finally see some new faces through the door at Auchenhowie, hopefully, they will all be top Clas-ie….
