Rangers have confirmed that winger Jordan Jones has left the club to sign for Wigan Athletic on a permanent deal for an undisclosed fee.

It was an expected move, hastened by Jones’ limited impact during his involvement in Rangers pre-season.

From that red card and injury against Celtic back in September 2019, it really was the beginning of the end and the player never recovered.

Off field matters, including the covid indiscretion alongside George Edmundson for which the pair were banned just compounded things.

Jones now returns to the English third tier where he spent time on loan at Sunderland last season, to forge a fresh start in his career and he also will be closer to his home town of Redcar in the north-east.

This move is very likely to be followed by further exits from Ibrox, including the likes of Brandon Barker, Glenn Middleton and Niko Katic for varying reasons, both permanent and loans.

As it stands, Steven Gerrard’s first team squad needs to trimmed further with certain individuals having no realisitc prospect of regular game time.

Then there is the equation of big money sales and acquisitions as we move further into August – VitalRangers expects further business to be done during this window.
