Gers should return for £5m target, the ideal man to replace Goldson

|

Vital Rangers has already taken a look at what centre-halves could be available to replace Connor Goldson should the worst come to the worst, and one player that we’ve looked at before should very much be back on the radar.

Steven Gerrard has enquired about John Souttar before only to be put off by the £5million price-tag, but with just a year left on his contract at Tynecastle, he could be the perfect fit.

The 24-year old has not had his problems to seek over the last few years, plagued with ankle/achilles issues, however, he has been fully fit since the end of last season and, if anything, looks fitter than he ever has, something the player himself revealed in an interview with The Edinburgh News:

“I’m feeling great. It’s the first time in a long time I’ve been able to go through pre-season and get my base fitness which has been brilliant. I’m feeling good and can’t wait for the season to start.

“I was loving it [pre-season]. When you are away from the game so often you dream of things like that, getting back involved with the boys.

“Even the running, before I would have complained but I wasn’t complaining at all.”

And on his early season form in which he has played a part in breaking a club clean sheet record, Souttar said:

“You play with a freedom because you have been in there and nearly had it taken away from you so you’ve just got to appreciate every time you go on the pitch and enjoy playing.”

Playing regularly, Souttar is a Scotland international and it’s not just his defending that attracted Gerrard in the first place, his ability to carry the ball out of defence and his passing range – which is commented on in the article – is eerily similar to Goldson’s, if not better.

If he gets to January, is injury free and has maintained his form, it would be a surprise if Ross Wilson doesn’t entertain the thought of bringing one of Scotland’s most promising players to Ibrox.
