Lundstram impresses as Gers find new way to play without Davis

|

It looks like Steven Gerrard has found the best position for John Lundstram.

He’s not Steven Davis, very few are on the Northern Ireland skipper’s level, but the summer signing is starting to display what he is capable of now that he is properly up to speed with how we play and playing in a team that dominates possession.

Playing centrally seems to suit him, it gives him the freedom to drop deep and help the centre-halves in possession but it also allows him to support the attack and win the ball back higher up, it was Lundstram’s intervention that led to Kemar Roofe’s opening goal – he also pressed the first receiver and the goalkeeper in the build up to Alfredo Morelos’s too.

Once he settled in, and particularly in the second half, the 27-year old moved the ball about quickly, switching play to the full-backs with one touch which played a key part in driving the team forward, not giving Livingston a chance to get back into shape and reset whenever they tried to counter-attack – that they never had a single shot all night suggests that he did a good job protecting the back four.

Rangers went toe-to-toe with Inter Milan to sign Ronaldo when he left Barcelona.

Ross Wilson could spend years trying to find a like-for-like replacement for Davis so, maybe, the best thing is not to try to, and instead, find a player that can control the tempo of a game and contribute in defence and attack but in their own style. Lundstram can offer just that, he may – on paper – have been a number eight at previous clubs but there is no reason why, against clubs that sit in in particular, that he can’t be trusted to set the pace and dictate the play – the early signs are promising, the problem may finally be solved.
