Former Gers Old Firm scorer turns out for Motherwell as a trialist

One-time Rangers midfielder Jamie Ness has been given a chance to stake a claim for a Premiership contract with Motherwell.

The 30-year old has been training with the Steelmen since their return to pre-season training last week and turned out for them today in a 1-0 defeat, away to Dumbarton.

As reported by the Daily Record, Ness is aiming to prove his fitness – having been without a club since last October when he was released by Dundee:

“Ness would bring a wealth of experience to the middle of the park, having played more than 100 games down south across spells with Plymouth Argyle, Scunthorpe United and Crewe Alexandra since leaving Ibrox.”

“He played just eight times for Dundee last season in a campaign hit by the pandemic.”

Breakthrough

Back in the 2010/11 season under Walter Smith, Ness came to the fore at Ibrox.

In a January ’11 Old Firm Scottish Cup 5th round clash, he struck a thunderbolt from outside the box to give Rangers an early opener – they would take the lead again before the game finished 2-2.

Celtic prevaled in the replay.

Ness was one of many players to join the exodus in the Summer of 2012 as adminstration hit hard – since then he has turned out for six different clubs with his most productive spell coming at Plymouth from 2017 to 2019.

If the player can win over Graham Alexander at Fir Park, who he played under at Scunthorpe, an Ibrox return of sorts will be on the cards.
