Rangers are far from a crisis in midfield but, as we saw last season, having strength in depth was key to our success and being able to manage the volume of games that playing for the Light Blues demands.

With Ryan Jack, Nnamdi Ofoborh and Glen Kamara all unlikely to be available for selection when the Champions League qualifiers come around, reinforcements in the middle of the park could well be a priority for Ross Wilson with one former target, James Garner of Manchester United said to be available for loan again despite coming up to the last year of his contract.

Speaking to the Manchester Evening News, the England youth cap hopes to impress in pre-season with many first-team regulars yet to return to action:

“I’ll just keep working hard, keep my head down and have to see what is going to be best for my development. But, ultimately, my dream is to be with the first team and play for United.”

He excelled during loan spells at Watford and Nottingham Forest and yet his future still remains uncertain, however, former United skipper, Bryan Robson, has been impressed with the youngster:

“For James, this is it. He has had his education now and is at that age where he can really prove himself this season, whether he’s going to be at Manchester United or go out on loan again.

“He’s a very intelligent footballer and works very hard at his game. Now it is up to James to step up and prove to Ole he is worthy of a place in the squad.”

Garner has been a target for Rangers on a couple of occasions and could be an option to help fill the gap, there’s also no reason why he couldn’t be a longer prospect if we decide to cash in on Kamara, if Robson rates him, that’s good enough for me.
