Rangers may be set to miss out on Bright Osayi-Samuel but have been given a boost in their attempts to sign Jacob Murphy of Newcastle United after it was revealed that the Premier League side are looking to add attacking reinforcements.

Indipendiente’s Alan Velasco is the man being lined up and it is believed that the winger has a £17.5million release clause but the Magpies will face stiff opposition for his signature according to El Intransigente.

What this means for Steven Gerrard is that he could land Murphy either on a pre-contract or – if Newcastle can get the Velasco deal done – get him in now for a significantly reduced fee, especially for a player that originally cost them £12m.

He has just one goal and one assist in the Premier League this season but has only played 600 minutes of football, justifying his decision not to renew his contract, at 25-years old, his next move could make or break his career in terms of medals and success.

Would Murphy go straight into our first-team?

No

Murphy would be perfect for us in that he is capable of playing as a winger or as a support forward in a more central position, similar to the way in which we adopt two “number 10s”, as he proved last season at Sheffield Wednesday, he is capable of contributing with decent numbers and despite being valued at £3m he would still be a bargain.

It would be another Ross Wilson coup if we were able to persuade such a highly rated and valued player to head north but if it was a choice between European football and winning silverware or relegation battles year-after-year, I know which one I’d be choosing.
