Steven Gerrard spoke after the weekend’s victory over Kilmarnock about the current focus being on getting points on the board rather than players’ contracts having seen Steven Davis deliver yet another man of the match performance, but this doesn’t mean that Ross Wilson isn’t working behind the scenes on other potential acquisitions.

Someone that Rangers have been linked with for most of the season is Newcastle United forward Jacob Murphy – once a £12million signing for the Magpies – and with the 25-year old yet to decide on his future, there is every chance that he could still end up at Ibrox, similar to John Lundstram, the club hasn’t ruled out a move which is as good as confirmation that there is at least an interest.

With Jordan Jones and Brandon Barker unlikely to feature again for the Light Blues we will need to add at least one more versatile attacker in the summer and as many as two strikers depending on the futures of Jermain Defoe and Alfredo Morelos and Murphy would represent the sort of transfer that could see us strengthen the first-team without breaking the bank.

Scott Wright has already made an impression and looks as though he could become an infinitely better player than the one that was so restricted by Aberdeen’s tactics but we have shown this season that the strength in depth has been key to such a consistent level of form – being able to cope without Morelos and Kemar Roofe for long periods exemplifies the work that Wilson and Gerrard have done.

Would Murphy be a good addition?

No

Murphy is similar to Wright in that he is someone who is capable of getting goals and assists but is playing in a team where the tactics just don’t suit the type of player that he is and is being held back by his manager on the rare occasions that he is given the opportunity to impress – think Scott Sinclair before he moved to Celtic, and we all know how that worked out.
