When Allan McGregor leaves Rangers, he will be missed in many ways including his presence on the pitch and in the dressing room but also for his deadpan responses to the media.

He’s some man, as proven once again following his elevation to Rangers’ Hall of Fame on Sunday evening. The club legend was visibly delighted with the honour, a thoroughly served award following decades of service to the club over two different spells.

Amazingly, McGregor made his Rangers debut under Dick Advocaat in February 2o02 in a Scottish Cup tie away to Forfar Athletic – over 21 years ago.

He was also on the bench in Rangers first competitive game following the birth of Saturday’s debutant at Livingston, Bailey Rice. The youngster arrived into the world on 4th October 2006.

That is longevity.

Amongst other pertinent questions, the veteran was asked by Sky Sports about a potential return to the Scotland fold considering the situation with Craig Gordon injured and David Marshall retired from international duty.

McGregor in his usual manner, delivered the following response:

“I wouldn’t have thought so, no. Nobody has spoken to me about it and I’ve not really thought about it. I’d find it highly unlikely.”

“Would I rule it out? I think I’ve got my holidays booked for that week to be honest with you.”

Importance

The vastly experienced, Edinburgh-born player has four Scottish titles, four Scottish cups and five league cups in his collection. There is an immediate change to add to his haul, with at least one other prize up for grabs this season.

McGregor will be absolutely crucial to Rangers’ prospects against Celtic in Sunday’s Viaplay Cup final and as ever at Ibrox, there is plenty at stake over the rest of this term. Yes, there is a strong probability of an end of season retirement for the 41-year old but there is still so much to contribute.
