As featured previously by Vital Rangers, Malmo continue to keep tabs on Filip Helander with ongoing speculation of a potential return home for the Swedish international.

The 2021 title winner has not been in action for Rangers since St Mirren away in April last year and his contract is set to expire at the end of this season.

A very talented, impressive defender but unable to be relied upon for availability, it is almost certain that the towering Swede at the club will part ways soon. It’s a shame but another reflection of a chronic injury problem at the club with several players affected.

Previously, this outlet noted the noise around the potential return to the club where Helander started his career. Having left in 2015 for Italy and now aged just 29 despite his injury setbacks, the chance could arise for the defender and his young family to return to their homeland.

Malmo sporting director Daniel Andersson told Fotbollskanalen:

“We have had a little contact in recent years. We’ll see how the situation is. He is still quite young,” Andersson said of Helander.

Like I said, we’ll see. We keep in touch with all interesting former Malmo players.”

This is very much one to keep an eye on. It makes sense for the player to get his career back on track in familiar surroundings at a level where he can still make a decent impact over the next few years.

In order to do that he needs to get to the bottom of his injury issues and hopefully he can win that battle but it won’t be Rangers who get any benefit from it as we are unlikely to see Fil Helander in the blue shirt again.
