Allan McGregor has been pivotal in Rangers return to the top of Scottish football and his nomination for SFWA Player of the Year says everything about the level of consistency he has displayed throughout the season.

His form has seen calls for him to be recalled to the Scotland squad for the European Championships, and the latest to throw their weight behind a return is Ally McCoist, who managed him for both club and country, as reported by The Daily Record.

“On the QT, absolutely. I wouldn’t make it public, but I’d certainly give him a wee phone call. Just to say, ‘Allan, by the way, just for the record, you are playing out of your skin’.

“Now let’s be clear. I’m not going to tell Steve Clarke how to do his job. I’m not going to start that carry-on because I know how difficult it is as a manager. But, my goodness, I’m sure everyone can agree. Should Allan McGregor be in the Scotland squad? Yes.

“Is that fair? Surely we are not going to argue whether he’s good enough to be in the Scotland squad on current form? So, on that basis, we’ve always said we want to take our best squad and our best players to the tournament.

“Find out. Listen, Allan might say no. If that’s the case, no harm done. Everyone moves on.”

He is the best keeper that Scotland has, that isn’t up for debate and even though the opportunity to play in a major tournament would be a huge pull for some, McGregor’s relationship with the SFA is a complicated one, Steve Clarke is also highly unlikely to go cap in hand to a Rangers player.

In a typically Scottish manner, we would rather have a keeper who is bang out of form or one playing in the second tier than one who has almost single handedly won games on his own, McCoist is right, we should take our best players to the European Championships but something tells me we won’t.
