It’s been reported today that Rangers are hoping to make Roma striker Umar Sadiq Steven Gerrard’s eighth addition to our playing squad this summer as preparations continue for the coming 2018/19 campaign.

With Jon Flanagan being the latest capture from Liverpool, Gerrard seems to have turned his attentions to the forward positions is the speculation is to be believed.

Sadiq is a 21-year-old forward and he spent he second half of last season out on loan with NAC Breda, returning five goals in 12 games.

Having come through the Serie A side’s youth setup, he’s also spent time with Bologna and Torino previously and his playing record reads 12 starts with seven goals. He’s also made a total of 16 substitute appearances.

It’s suggested that the initial deal will certainly be a season-long loan arrangement, but given his age and believed potential, I’d be surprised if there wasn’t an option to purchase in January or next summer. It’s one thing Gerrard leaning on his Liverpool contacts for our short-term benefit – it’s another to train up an unknown clubs’ player on the same basis.

Sadiq is said to be 6ft 4in so he would certainly give us another dimension at the top of the pitch and options to change a game are never a bad thing.
