Was this always predictable?

Former Rangers defender David Bates is making a name for himself after leaving Ibrox this summer, with the Hamburg man now attracting attention from clubs in the English Premier League.

The 22-year-old, who made just 28 appearances for the Gers, has been crucial in the heart of the German side’s defence so far this season, helping keep six league clean sheets in his eight appearances so far.

The Daily Record are now reporting that clubs like Arsenal, Everton, Leicester, Watford and Southampton are now all tracking his progress, sending scouts to watch him in action.

He left Rangers at the end of last season after failing to agree a new deal at the club, but it now looks like the club could have done more to keep him around.

We always like to see players do well after they leave the club, but it would be a bitter pill to swallow to see Bates end up moving to England for big money and make it at the elite level.

What could he have achieved in a Steven Gerrard team? The new manager has transformed Rangers defensively and Bates may have blended well with the likes of Connor Goldson.

I guess we’ll never know.
