Poor Rangers defending on Thursday night cost Steven Gerrard’s side a famous result away in Russia, losing 4-3 to Spartak Moscow in UEFA Europa League action.

Despite taking the lead in the match on three occasions, defensively the team were all over the place, with usually reliable players like Connor Goldson and Nikola Katic looking like shadows of their early season selves.

Confidence has been knocked out of our central defenders and I’m left scratching my head wondering where it all went wrong.

Gerrard didn’t miss with his criticism after the match and rightly so, there’s no excuse for that kind of performance at any level.

Spartak were there for the taking and it must go down as an opportunity lost. That’s especially true now we’ve dropped down to third place in the group.

Goldson, signed this summer for a reported £3m, got the majority of criticism for supporters having netted an own goal and seen a shot deflect off him for the Russians’ fourth of the night.

Is it now time to drop him for this weekend’s match against Motherwell, to show him that everyone in this squad has to earn their place in the team on a week-to-week basis?

Plenty of fans thought so and you can have your say in our poll at the bottom of the page…
