Rangers have been linked with α few out of contract players this summer, the highest profile ones suggesting that it is the work of agents rather than any real interest though.

Gary Cahill, Ross Barkley and now Fabian Delph are all players who have commanded six-figure weekly salaries with the latter two not exactly robust when it comes to their respective medical histories.

There is no doubting their talents, however, it may be that, after Aaron Ramsey, we have had our fingers burned.

Speaking to Football Insider, former Aston Villa striker Gabby Agbonlahor has had his say on Rangers rumoured interest in Delph:

“I think it all depends on what Delph is thinking about doing. He’s had an amazing career, won trophies.

“If he wants to move his family to Scotland and continue playing there, then maybe.

“But it’s hard to judge because I know he’s a big family man and his kids will be in Manchester settled.

“It will all depend on what Rangers offer him and the package.

“I’m sure, knowing him, that Delph will still want to carry on playing football. He’s an athlete and I’m sure he’ll want to carry on.

“But he might have better options than Rangers, we’re yet to see.”

For α start, I just don’t see where Delph would fit in at Rangers, then there is Charlie McCann’s promotion to the first-team in recent weeks. What sort of message would it send out to the academy hopefuls if we signed α player who won’t be match fit for ages and who is injury prone?

There is also the financial element, yes, he won’t be on anything like what he was on at Man City or Everton but he will still be looking for Premier League wages, the sort that would probably make him our highest paid player – I’d doubt, if we did make an offer, that he would have anything better, after all, if he did, he’d already have signed.
