Will Enzo Maresca be the new Celtic manager and the next man to step up to face Steven Gerrard?

It was reported yesterday that Maresca is the current bookies favourite to take the top job at Parkhead.

Who is he, many will ask?

The 41-year old Italian is currently head coach of Manchester City’s U23 development side and in his playing career, he featured most notably for Juventus and Sevilla.

However, Maresca is a novice as a manager and has no senior experience – drawing some parallels to Gerrard.

As an assistant, he was previously at Unai Emery’s side in his backroom team at Sevilla and more recently he assisted Manuel Pellegrini at West Ham, prior to taking on his current role at Man City.

Would Celtic really go for an unknown in Scottish football terms with a limited track record in the British game overall?

With significant budget constraints, it remains to be seen just what level they will be operating at in the appointment of their new man.

Some Rangers fans have been pondering, hoping for the next appointment across the city to resemble the disaster that was Rangers appointment of Pedro Caixinha, back in 2017.

On the popular Rangers fans messageboard, followfollow.com – this very issue has been discussed and some of the responses are included below.

“He could be their Pedro.”

“Strange route for a club of their perceived size to go down should they go for him and fergal harkin as their DOF.”

“Can only think it’s a recommendation from Lawwell’s son (scouting and recruitment within City group) and will allow them a couple of decent loan deals whilst sorting their structure out.”

“The Italian Ian Cathro.”

“For those saying he could be Pedro, he could be Gerrard. They have a real rebuild on their hands but we (the board) can’t afford to become complacent or it’ll come back to bite us.”

“Sounds like another Angelo Alessio and look how he turned out in Scottish Football.”

Other talk has included names such as Eddie Howe, Rafa Benitez and Steve Clarke.

That is very much for Celtic and their fans to concern themselves with – everyone in the Rangers camp will have far more enjoyable, celebratory matters to contend with over the next few months!
