With a number of positives to come from last Saturday’s fifth round Scottish Cup victory for Rangers over Hamilton Academical, one player has certainly begun taking the headlines following his January arrival and manager Steven Gerrard couldn’t be more pleased with the impact Ianis Hagi is having.

With a brace from Scotty Arfield, and further goals from Joe Aribo and Alfredo Morelos taking us to a 4-1 victory to book our place in the next round, fans will be hoping back to back victories are the end of our recent wobbles in form and results, and although Hagi was taken off late on in the last game, the Hibernian clash certainly showed what he could do for us.

Reflecting on his performances since his arrival and his effort against Hibs in particular, Gerrard admitted to Sky Sports that although he was still trying to control the hype surrounding the 21-year-old talent, his efforts on the pitch were making that incredibly difficult.

“He hasn’t helped me there, has he? It was a fantastic finish. Looking back on the game, you can see him coming to terms with the physicality up here in Scotland and getting used to the speed and the pace of the first half. But he grew and grew and grew as the game went on. I’m sure people are going to get carried away now because he’s scored the winner on his first start. But he will still take time to adapt to all the different venues and teams we come against. He’s certainly a talent.”

It’s certainly a bright start from the Genk loanee and given the fouls he’s already been on the end of, it’s been a lively introduction to Scottish football but Gerrard has been impressed with his attitude and the fact he keeps on getting back up so he doesn’t doubt that we’ll see even more improvement once he’s settled in fully.

“It will be slightly different in Scotland to the league he has played in. In Belgium, it’s slightly more technical and less aggressive than in Scotland. But it is what it is. He was aware of it before he arrived. He’s actually got a better build than he looks, he’s a very strong lad. So he’ll be fine. He kept getting back up and that’s the impressive thing about him. Other people in that situation might have gone missing but he rolled his sleeves up and got on with it.”

Few won’t be happy with his efforts so far, that’s for sure.
