There are no major surprises expected in the Rangers squad that will be named to face Aberdeen in the Viaplay Cup semi-final on Sunday afternoon with Michael Beale providing an update on the latest injury issues.

Following on from Tannadice last week, the same group will be tasked with booking Rangers place in the first domestic final of the season to set-up an Old Firm decider next month. One or two changes overall will likely take place but Beale’s men must take heart and confidence from the recent showing against Celtic as well as the way the game was put beyond doubt in Dundee.

Ongoing, long-term lay offs still apply to Tom Lawrence, Filip Helander and Ianis Hagi although the Romanian international is getting closer to a first team matchday return. John Souttar is progressing well in training but will not be thrown in, prematurely as stated by the manager:

“Souttar trained all week and is ahead of schedule, (but) this week is too soon and expect him around the squad for St Johnstone which is good news. Colak had a slight problem and is touch and go for this weekend. Roofe is ready to go, he is a really high-quality player.”

“Sands has had a bit of a knock and has missed training this week, he will return to training tomorrow. He has played out of position a lot this season and would like the opportunity to give him some time in his preferred position.”

Antonio Colak will be very disappointed, having returned last week against Dundee United but an ineffectual first half display was compounded with the confirmation of a new setback as Alfredo Morelos replaced him for the second half.

We all know about the qualities of Kemar Roofe but there is very little confidence in the former Leeds and Anderlecht man staying fit for an extended period. Despite that, Beale is right to aim to get to the bottom of his problems even if the Jamaica international is fast approaching last chance saloon to salvage his Ibrox career.
