What a difference a year makes.

I’ve already apologised to Connor Goldson and James Tavernier for those who ever doubted their ability to lead us to the title, but given the historical importance of the achievement, and the height that could still be reached, we seriously have to consider several individuals for installation into the Rangers Hall of Fame.

Connor Goldson and James Tavernier

There will have been players that have won more in their time wearing Light Blue but players like the captain and vice-captain have shown over the last few years what being a “Ranger” is really about – not once did they give up the fight – and this season their leadership has been every bit as good as the likes of Terry Butcher and Richard Gough, they may have contrasting styles but they have been equally as effective.

With over 20 goals and over 20 assists between them, their contribution at the sharp end of the park is as impressive as the nine league goals conceded at the other, the chances of seeing defenders ever produce numbers like these again are pretty slim, in many games, they have simply been the difference between winning and losing.

Allan McGregor

There are murmurings, albeit quiet ones just now, that Allan McGregor is approaching being the greatest Rangers keeper of all time. If you disagree with this, or grew up with Chris Woods and Andy Goram between the sticks, have a look at his trophy cabinet, the number of goals he concedes and, more importantly, the number of times he wins points on his own or keeps his side in European games – nobody can argue that he isn’t as valuable as his predecessors.

Who scored Rangers first competitive goal of the season?

Steven Davis

See above. Steven Davis over his two spells has been an incredible servant and few would argue against him being a better player now than he was ten years ago in his mid-twenties. He might not wear the armband anymore but the way that he drives the team on from midfield perfectly illustrates his importance to Steven Gerrard, fans need look no further than the Livingston game where he visibly upped the tempo – perceived as a sitting midfielder, he was the one who had the shot from inside the box that led to Alfredo Morelos having the easiest of tap-ins, all but confirming “55”.

Alfredo Morelos

It might be somewhat controversial and yes, he has had his “moments” domestically, but his goal contribution in the Europa League – especially last season – has almost single handedly allowed the manager to have the budget that he needed to strengthen his squad properly. He may not have had the best year – and yet he has 27 goal contributions in 35 games – but when he was needed most, at the business end of the season, he has stepped up, winning goals against Aberdeen, Hibs and Livingston has seen us confirm what we already knew – that Rangers are the best team in the country by a mile.

This whole squad will be remembered forever but there is a select few that rightly deserve the tag of “legend”, there could be more added to the list but, for now, these are the players that should have a place in our hearts and our history forever.
