It was good to see Ross McCrorie seemingly back on the training pitch once again. One of our major weaknesses at the moment is at centre half and having the 20 year old available for the last couple of months of the season would be a big boost.

With Bates out of consideration with injury, and Russell Martin having struggled for form and fitness in recent months, the youngster`s return would be very timely.

Graham Murty used him regularly at both centre back and as a holding midfielder before his injury, and although it must be said that the player still has a lot to learn playing in either role, there was some very good signs that he could be a first team regular for years to come despite only having made 18 senior appearance for us.

Having young players coming through the system at the Academy is something we all want to see, and we have been very successful over the last few years developing such talent.

We can`t compete at the moment financially with Celtic, due to their Champions League participation, but there is no doubt that such a gap can be bridged by ensuring there is a pathway to our first team for some of the best young players in Scotland.

I am hoping whoever the manager is next season, they keep the focus on bringing through the youngsters. We don`t want average journeyman stopping the progress of some of our brightest youngsters.

What we require most is a group of players who know what it means to play for Rangers, and possess both the graft and skill to move us back to the top of Scottish football. I have no doubt players like McCrorie and others can play a big part in us catching our rivals in the coming months and years.

Who is our best centre back pairing? Let me know in the poll.
