The one that got away – the great Morelos counter attack goal that never was

With the Rangers TV release of all Alfredo Morelos’ goals for the club in one compilation, there has been plenty of debate in terms of which were the best.

Some were more memorable for their importance , whilst others had the stamp of quality all over them.

Think of the important tap-in against Livingston to bring the title nearer last season, to the wonderful double header against Feyenoord in Rotterdam in 2019. Then there was the clincher against Legia Warsaw earlier that season, to the pile drive against porto at Ibrox.

100 goals, each with their own story but there’s another which wrongly, never stood and didn’t make the cut.

As recalled this afternoon by Derek Clark of the Rangers Review, a very bad decision in Steven Gerrard’s debut season had consequences for the player and team.

Back in November 2018, Rangers travelled to Moscow to face Spartak.

In a crazy goal-fest of a game with both teams defences out of sorts, the moment of controversy came just before half-time.

With Rangers leading 2-3, a sweeping counter attack saw Daniel Candeias play a fine ball across and behind the Spartak back line into the path of Morelos, who swept home first time with the inside of his right foot.

In a time before VAR, the lineman’s flag went up and the goal never stood. Replays would show that the Colombian was clearly onside.

Into the second half and the visitors never recovered from a Spartak sucker punch and two quick goals in succession. 4-3 was the final score with the vistors goals coming from an OG, Candeias and Glenn Middleton.

Would Rangers have let a two goal advantage slip? We’ll never know and that decision could well have cost a place in the last 32 of the competition.
