James Tavernier’s goal against Peterhead in the Petrofac Training Cup Final won him the Goal of the Season gong at last night’s annual awards ceremony.

With 15 goals to his name this season, and his leveller against Alloa at the weekend seeing him move above Sandy Jardine and John Greig haul in the fullback goalscoring charts, Tavernier actually had three contenders in the Top Ten shortlist.

Speaking to the Official Site after being presented with the award the 24 year old summer arrival said it was probably the best goal of his career.

‘That has to be the best goal of my career, obviously the Hibs goal meant a lot and that was a big highlight to score this one the way I did was right up there. I would say Hibs and my Petrofac goal were my best two and then for number three there would be a few contenders. But they have all been great goals, I have enjoyed every single one of them and it has been a great journey this season.’

With Young Player of the Year Barrie McKay’s strike against Celtic coming too late to be included, Tavernier admitted that should’ve been the winner, but he wasn’t going to share the gong.

‘I won`t be giving Barrie the trophy; unfortunately for him my name is on the award! His goal was unbelievable and for the occasion, against Celtic, then you can`t ask for better but from a technical point of view and technique wise I would take mine all day long! Five goals was the highest I had scored in a season before I came here so to get into double figures was unimaginable.’

He went on to joke.

‘I do get a little bit of battering from Waggy for my goals, even against Alloa at the weekend he said I was in a striker`s position but I just love getting my feet or head on the ball and scoring a goal.’

With him picking up the award, he was asked to rank his own Top Five goals from the season so far, and he went for.

‘Andy Halliday`s debut goal at Hibs would be up there and Barrie`s goal against Celtic would be in there, then…can I put myself in? I would pick my Petrofac goal and my Hibs free-kick. Then I would pick the Jason Holt goal against Dundee when the team built up the goal, it was such a team effort and the goal was a credit to the team.’
