It has been suggested that Rangers will be paying the contracts in full for Giovanni van Bronckhorst and his close staff.

With the departure of the Dutch coach, Roy Makaay, Dave Vos, Arno Phillips and Yori Bosschaart will almost certainly be leaving the club together, whilst a huge question mark would appear regarding Ceri Bowley with the Welsh coach having recently joined them at Ibrox after a period working together at the City Football Group.

A recent report in the last hour from the Netherlands, coming from Marcel van der Kraan who has a line to Gio’s camp as well as appearing on Sky Sports News as a specialist on Dutch football matters has suggested that in the severance, Rangers will continue to pay Gio into next year.

De Telegraaf included in their piece:

“The Scottish club will fulfill all its obligations with regard to the contract of the Dutch coach that will continue until next year.”

“Van Bronckhorst has become a victim of his own success. He quickly achieved successes, which led to millions in sales, but the club refused to invest heavily with the income. And that was precisely what was needed in a season in which the Champions League was scheduled with a killer schedule. Between January and August, Rangers sold 40 million euros worth of players, only a small part of which was spent on strengthening the squad.”

There are definite merits in the passage above underlining that not all of the recent failings at Ibrox have been the absolute responsibility of Gio.

He did publicly convey a satisfaction with the Summer transfer business, despite what may have been said behind the scenes. More damaging has been the action on the pitch and what van Bronckhorst has largely been responsible for, including those Champions League drubbings and the infamous comments after Ajax in Amsterdam on how Rangers could not compete.

Those factors have been substantial as to why the Dutch coach is no longer at the helm at Ibrox but it is a development that will be costly for Rangers, as expected. As well as the severance packages for GvB’s team collectively, new finance will be required for a new manager even if he is currently out of work including any further backroom additions as well as the budget for the upcoming January transfer window. That would have been required anyway but this game changer makes things quite different.
