Gio keeps everyone guessing on midfielder decisions

At present, there is no imminent transfer activity involving Rangers and the midfield in particular but Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s selections keep everyone guessing.

The boss has declared himself happy with his options in the engine room but is there room for a box-to-box, all rounder? It would appear so, but no new significant arrivals will happen unless it follows an exit.

Over the last three to four games, there has been plenty of variation leading to much debate on the outside in regard to the best options and even transfer calls to be made going forward.

In Belgium against USG, the middle two of Glen Kamara and Ryan Jack was very inadequate on that occasion. Partly out of necessity, there was the bold choice of John Lundstram sitting behind an attacking three of Scott Arfield, Tom Lawrence and an inverted Malik Tillman.

Then domestically, against Kilmarnock last week and St Johnstone on Saturday, Lundstram was complimented by Steven Davis and Ryan Jack in the respective games.

There is a flexibility and a lack of a defined style in Gio’s vision that means change is inevitable, as witnessed in recent weeks. Gio (below) stated in the press conference after the 4-0 over the Saints:

“We have so many good midfielders. I’m happy to use them (all). Kamara came in late in the game and we still have Steven Davis on the bench. We have so many possibilities, we want a squad like we have now to compete in all the competitions we are in.”

“If you control the midfield you control the game, I was pleased with them today.”

The upcoming tussle with PSV over two games will tell us a lot in terms of where we are at this stage of the season and the level we want to be at, midfield included.
