According to reports today, Rangers chairman David Murray wants to bring in Charlton manager Alan Curbishley to replace Alex McLeish who is almost a certainty to be sacked sooner rather than later.

After bringing the SPL championship to Rangers last season, McLeish has had a disaster this season for Rangers.

Rangers lie fourth place in the SPL, 12 points behind Celtic & Hearts and 8 points behind Hibernian. They have also been knocked out of the CIS Insurance League Cup and their last 16 Champions League place is also in major doubt.

There is mounting speculation as to who McLeish’s successor will be, names already linked are George Burley, Graeme Souness, Walter Smith, Terry Butcher, Michael and Brian Laudrup, Didier Deschamps and Ottmar Hitzfeld but it is thought that Alan Curbishley is top of David Murray’s list.

However the cost of bringing Curbishley to Rangers could be at least £3 million. It would cost £850,000 to terminate McLeish’s contract and £2 million compensation for Curbishley as well as terminating the contracts of first team coaches Andy Watson and Jan Wouters.

It is thought that Curbishley has a clause in his contract to allow him to talk to six named clubs at an agreed compensation, those clubs are Manchester Utd, Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Tottenham and Newcastle.

Any clubs outwith those six would have to pay £2 million.
