It looks like Rangers have – finally – made up their mind about who they want to replace Giovanni van Bronckhorst.

Michael Beale, the immediate and long-term favourite to step into the Dutchman’s shoes even before he was sacked, is now in “pole position” to take charge with The Telegraph’s John Percy claiming that an official approach has been made.

There are advantages and disadvantages to every appointment, of course there is, and it would appear that Beale is the one who has the lowest risk.

He would come into a squad that he is familiar with, he knows the training ground, staff and stadium but perhaps most importantly, he knows the expectations at Rangers and what obstacles we face on a weekly basis in the Scottish Premiership.

Beale might not be an exciting appointment for some, however, has given numerous interviews since his departure with Steven Gerrard that suggests he is a lot more attack-minded that the former gaffer and that we would see a considerably more aggressive Rangers team than the one that he was tasked with setting up as a coach.

There is also the European aspect. Our reputation was restored on the continent thanks, predominantly, to the work that Beale did on the training ground, that can’t be ignored but we all know what the biggest problem is – the nine-point gap to Celtic.

If Percy is correct and Rangers have made an official approach, it should be a done deal and completed quickly, but it is essential that he needs to be backed in the transfer market – not many coaches could get a tune out of a midfield that is still having to play Scott Arfield and Steven Davis as often as we currently are, regardless of how well thought of they are.
