An article in The Daily Record has reported that Rangers are looking to League 1 in England to add to their strikers with Peterborough United Director of Football, Barry Fry, revealing who they have been watching.

Ivan Toney is the forward said to be on Steven Gerrard’s radar with the 24-year old firing 26 goals in 39 appearances this season but there may be a stumbling block if the Gers attempt to prise him away from the Posh.

Fry, (originally quoted in The Daily Mail) claimed to have contact from intermediaries linking both sides of the Old Firm with Toney but had a word of warning for them:

“I’ve had agents on telling me that Rangers and Celtic are very interested.

“But I haven’t had any calls from either Rangers or Celtic, personally.

“If they have any sense, they’ll pay us £15million to get him. If they haven’t any sense at all, then I won’t be hearing from them.

“As things stand, we won’t get promoted and won’t even be in the play-offs.

“That being the case, Ivan Toney is definitely for sale. But only at the right price.”

For perspective, Toney has spent most of his career in League 1 and although his stats for this season are impressive, his record for Peterborough is just over a goal every two games, Rangers would be highly unlikely to sell a Colombian international who has just scored 14 goals in a single Europa League campaign for £20m and replace him with a player who has never played – let alone scored – at the same level for £15m.

True or false, Graeme Souness's first signing as Rangers manager was Terry Butcher?

Fry doesn’t help his cause by also revealing that Toney will “definitely” be for sale if they fail to get promoted and it currently doesn’t look good for Peterborough sitting outside the play-off places, the striker is also approaching the last year of his contract and in six months time will be able to sign a pre-contract agreement – if he stands by his demands of £15m, there is every chance the player will be walking away for free.

Rangers will no doubt have an extensive list of players to bolster the attack and relieve some of the goalscoring burden from Morelos and Jermain Defoe with Toney unlikely to be the last name mentioned, however, there will be few names that are linked with such an exorbitant price tag.
