Rangers finally managed to beat Hibernian this season at the fourth attempt and leapfrog them into third place for good measure.

Goals from Kris Boyd in the first half and Barry Ferguson in the second secured all three points for the Gers in an exciting game at Ibrox today.

Rangers started with much the same back four as last week but Rodriguez came in at the expense of Andrews. In the midfield Brahim Hemdani replaced Bob Malcolm and up front Kris Boyd came in for Nacho Novo.

It was a bright start from Rangers and Thomas Buffel had an early chance to give Rangers the lead but his header went just wide of goal.

Chris Burke, lively as ever had Gers next chance after he slipped his marker and fired a shot at goal but again it went wide of the goal.

At the other end Rangers had a real scare when Ivan Sproule was clear on goal but his shot was cleared off the line by Soti Kyrgiakos.

Chris Burke of all people was the next player to save Rangers with a goal line clearance when he headed a Gary Caldwell shot off the line.

After surviving those scares it was Rangers who took the lead five minutes from half-time after another lung bursting run from Chris Burke on the right hand side, he cut the ball back to Kris Boyd who finished well from 15 yards out.

Rangers took the 1-0 lead into half-time and a few minutes after the restart could’ve been two ahead when Dado Prso’s low shot came off the post.

The Gers continued to pressure Hibs and youngster Steven Smith was the next to try his luck but his shot went just wide. That was followed by a chance for Kris Boyd to double his tally but his shot was well saved by Simon Brown.

Rangers finally got the goal they needed to kill Hibs off in the 74th minute and it was skipper Barry Ferguson who grabbed it. The captain fired a powerful shot through a load of green and white jerseys and into the net and gave Rangers the win they craved.

So Rangers go back up to third place but still remain 8 points behind second placed Hearts who had a comfortable win over Motherwell.

Now they can concentrate on that game against Villarreal on Wednesday and go into it with renewed confidence.
