Gerardo Seoane for Rangers manager, anyone? The 44-year old Swiss coach is something of an outsider, certainly in terms of the expected candidates but he has now been linked with the vacant role at Ibrox.

With his name first coming into consideration in public a few hours ago, the former Bayer Leverkusen manager certainly has experience of operating at a high level but where has this link came from?

Much of the noise has emanated from social media and Instagram in particular where it was dicovered that the accounts of Rangers and Steven Gerrard were the last two to be ‘followed’ by Seoane’s verified account.

These little clues do sometimes grow into something bigger, or at the very least it can be clever engagement to get a name into the open and out there in the debate. In this case, it will be one or the other to some extent but it is certainly interesting if the 44-year old is a genuine contender for the job.

Gerardo ‘Gerry’ Seoane led Bayer Leverkusen to a very credible third place finish last season in the Bundesliga but has since been replaced by Xabi Alonso who will bring his side to Ibrox on 10th December in the next game ahead of the competitive re-start five days later against Hibs. There’s an interesting sub-plot!

The Swiss lost his job after a terrible start to this current season for the North-Rhine Westphalia club which included a run of eight defeats in 12 games, which is far from flattering at face value.

He is a former title winner in Switzerland with Young Boys whilst he oversaw a Europa League double over Celtic last term with Leverkusen.
