Rangers’ pre-season build-up is in full flow as we finished our ten-day training camp out in Spain and headed back to Scotland yesterday.

With the players working hard as our fitness work continues stepping up a gear as we prepare for the Europa League kick-off before turning our attention to the coming 2018/19 Premiership campaign, Gerrard has claimed that the players are in fact ahead of where they should be at this stage of the summer and he couldn’t be more delighted with that.

Speaking to the Official Site after our last training session in Spain before we headed back to continue work at our training ground, the former England man explained.

“I think I am slightly ahead, certainly from a fitness point of view. The reason we came back on the date we did come back was to give them time to rest from the season they have just had. They have been battered from pillar to post and been criticised really heavily – it was a tough season mentally with the players, so we wanted to give them extra time off with their families. But to do that, we had to make sure that this 10 days was really tough and we pushed them. That is why we tried to get two weeks training into them in the 10 days.”

Having applied themselves across that ten-day spell, Gerrard went on to say that from the numbers the players were returning they were ‘over-delivering’ but that simply means, including technical and tactical aspects, the squad are where he wanted them to be at this stage. Obviously, there is still work to be done, and Gerrard admits himself that some players have taken to his philosophy quicker than others but that’s always going to be the case when things are changed.

As the next stage of pre-season now gets underway he’s happy enough that we’re in a ‘better place’ so now the targets move and we see how gets to the new levels wanted.

Some fans remain sceptical and simply want to see it work on the pitch.
