Gerrard’s decision a statement for Scottish football

|

Steven Gerrard has single handedly raised the profile of Scottish football and I’ll not be persuaded otherwise, even if the SPFL and SFA powers that be haven’t taken full advantage of the fact.

It was worldwide news when he as announced as Rangers manager but not only that, his exploits in the Europa League have seen Scotland’s coefficient rise to it’s highest level for 20 years.

For years, regardless of results between Scottish and English teams, our neighbours have looked down on us, even in 1992/93 when Rangers were one of the wealthiest clubs in Europe and could count Ballon d’Or nominees in our squad, Leeds United were expect to breeze past us in Champions League qualifying and we all know how that turned out.

Gerrard could, if he turns Aston Villa down, make an even bigger statement though – that a step up means a bigger and better job, not one at a club currently five points off bottom spot just because of the league they’re in, it would put a few commentators back in their boxes too.

Will Gerrard go to Aston Villa?

Yes

No

No

The Premier League might be a richer league but that doesn’t make every team in it a step up from Rangers, we know this and yet you will still see individuals on social media who would argue that we would struggle in the English Championship despite results against the likes of Feyenoord, Porto, Benfica and Midtjylland suggesting otherwise.

Judging what is and what isn’t a “big” club is far from an exact science, Villa’s history suggests that they certainly come under that category even if they haven’t been competitive at the sharp end of the Premier League for some years – do they have a supporters club in Azerbaijan though? I wouldn’t think so.
