Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has played down suggestions the club could be set to imminently move for Liverpool Dominic Solanke in the January transfer window.

The Gers have been consistently linked with the Reds prospect over the last few months with the latest round of speculation arriving via The Scottish Sun at the end of November.

Although obviously the player would only be arriving at Ibrox on loan, there are still challenges to overcome in securing his signature, with English Premier League outfits such as Crystal Palace also showing interest.

That may be why Gerrard is tempering expectations when talking about a potential deal, telling The Daily Mail: “I haven’t heard Dominic Solanke say he wants to leave Liverpool. I haven’t heard Liverpool say they want him to leave, so there’s nothing really to say about it.”

It certainly doesn’t sound like the 21-year-old will be an early arrival in the January transfer window if he comes at all.

The Gers are badly needing some help in the attacking areas with the burden of goalscoring all on Alfredo Morelos’ shoulders.

The Colombian is having an excellent season but he can’t be expected to drag the team forward on his own and having Solanke competing for places would give the whole squad a boost.

Hopefully the club are closing in on a striking signing, whether or not the Liverpool man is available.
