Rangers may still be in with a chance of qualifying from our UEFA Europa League group, but there’s no doubt that last night was a major disappointment performance wise.

There were definitely positives to take from the match, in the first forty-five minutes anyway, but almost all of them were to do with our attacking prowess.

Defensively, both in midfield and the back four, we were all over the place throughout and our confidence looks pretty shot when it comes to counteracting the opposition in our own half.

One person who was curiously absent from the team last night was Ryan Jack, a player who can definitely bring a bit of solidity back to our shape and pressing game.

Steven Gerrard opted to go for different midfielders on the night, which to me was odd considering that playing away in Russia might require us to call upon our best defensive minded midfielder. It was a misstep from the manager.

Don’t get me wrong, Jack isn’t the perfect footballer and it could be argued that against packed Scottish Premiership defences he is even something of a luxury player due to his lack of attacking ambition, but against Motherwell on Sunday he could be crucial.

The Steelmen are as physical as they come in the Scottish top-flight Jack simply must return to the starting eleven.

In possession he rarely wastes the ball and can find a pass as well as anyone in the middle of the park. His determination and positioning are key assets when pressing our opponents.

Given he didn’t even come off the bench last night, he’ll be as fit and raring to as anyone and could be vital in securing what will be crucial three points on our return to domestic action.
