Gerrard wants to bring stand-out 27-year-old to Rangers this summer

|

Ibrox boss Steven Gerrard is hoping to make Graeme Shinnie a Rangers player this summer, as reported by The Scottish Sun. but the player has been warned he could make himself a hate figure if he completes the switch.

The paper say that the Rangers manager is eager to sign the Aberdeen stand-out on a free transfer, with his contract up at the end of the season.

He would be the second Dons captain in a row to make the move to Ibrox on a free after Ryan Jack’s transfer in 2017.

One former Aberdeen star has warned him off the move though, with Scott Booth telling reporters that Shinnie risks his reputation in the city if he signs up at Ibrox.

As quoted by The Scottish Sun, Booth said:

It is a difficult decision for Graeme. I actually had an opportunity at one point to go to Rangers and for one reason and another it never came off.

But 100 per cent in the back of my head was the thought that if I took the opportunity that I wouldn’t get back into Aberdeen again.

That was a really big stumbling block for me. In some respects it’s probably easier now to make that move because back then we had a bit of success and players at the club who had been there for a long time and were literally telling you not to go [to Rangers].

Ultimately whether Shinnie decides to make the move is up to his ambition. Aberdeen may have gotten the best of Rangers over the last few years but we’re a club with much greater long-term prospects at home and abroad.

He may decide not to burn bridges in Aberdeen by signing with Rangers, but if that means so much to him then he’s not the kind of player we need in the team anyway.

It’ll certainly be interesting to see how it all plays out.
