Gerrard sweating on four Rangers injury doubts ahead of Celtic clash

|

The Daily Record report there are four Rangers injury doubts to keep an eye on this week in the build-up to Sunday’s visit to face Neil Lennon’s Celtic in the Scottish Premiership.

The international break has been a chance for some players to build their fitness ahead of the crucial Old Firm derby, but Steven Gerrard could be facing a number of selection issues.

The paper say that Borna Barisic, Ryan Jack, Scott Arfield and Andy Halliday are all doubts for the fixture, which isn’t ideal given there is crossover in the positions they play.

Barisic was substituted off when on Croatia duty at the weekend and the hamstring problem looks like it will almost certainly rule him out of not only this weekend’s match but also for many weeks afterwards.

Halliday would be expected to fill in, but he’s had struggles of his own recently after being substituted off at half-time during our last match at home to Kilmarnock. If he doesn’t make the visit to Celtic Park we’ll have to go deep into our back-up options.

In midfield, Arfield was called up to the Canada squad but pulled out last week after missing the Killie match completely. He’s been spotted in training this week, but it’s unclear whether he will have recovered from his problem in time to face the Hoops.

That’s bad news considering Ryan Jack is also a potential absentee. He similarly sat out the recent Kilmarnock draw and has been in and out of the team recently, apparently struggling to maintain a consistent level of fitness.

What it means for the starting eleven this weekend is of course unclear, but hopefully the manager can give more clarity on the injury issues over the coming days.
