Steven Gerrard has made an emotional pledge to Ibrox legend Walter Smith.

Due to recovery from hospital treatment, club icon Smith will not be able to take in the Ibrox trophy day celebrations in person.

Last night, Gerrard paid tribute to his mentor, striking the right tone in an emotional statement that was deeply appreciated by the fans.

Adding to the feeling of a momentous weekend ahead, Gerrard set out how he aims to make up for lost time with Smith in due course.

As reported by the Glasgow Times:

“Listen, I’ve gone on record many times about how special he is, not just as a manager but as a man.”

“Unfortunately, he’s been unwell of late and it’s a shame because I would have liked to have had him in the stadium on Saturday and have shared a photograph with him but that time will come.”

“It will be a special moment for me because Walter has really gone out of his way for me so the very least I can do is to share that moment with him.”

“Sadly, it won’t be this weekend but I’ll make it my business to make sure that I have a picture with Walter Smith, myself and that cup.”

Counsel

Earlier this season on the Rangers TV gantry for the Europa League tie against Galatasaray, a memorable moment was captured with Gerrard joining Smith and Graeme Souness post match.

The current Gers boss has entrenched himself with the culture of Rangers and kept counsel with key figures such as those two men who came before him in the big job at Rangers.

Whilst Walter Smith won’t be at Ibrox tomorrow to see the Premiership trophy held aloft, he will be firmly in the thoughts of many.

When it comes, that photo will be one to remember – from one title winner to another.
